As a member of the Daughters of Charity Health System, Seton Coastside has served the Coastside community for over 35 years. Originally, the hospital was founded in 1970 and named the Moss Beach Rehabilitation Hospital. For the next decade, a Dr. George Goldthorpe operated this rehabilitation hospital until the ownership of the hospital was transferred to the City of Half Moon Bay.

In 1980, Sister Florence, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Daughters of Charity, Victor Cox, Half Moon Bay Community Board President and Mayor Albert Adreveno of Half Moon Bay, signed the acquisition agreement for the Daughters of Charity to operate the Half Moon Bay Community Hospital. The agreement to sponsor and operate this facility had been made at the request of the Coastside community that sought the provision of top quality healthcare to the growing Coastside community.

In 1981, the hospital was dedicated by Archbishop John R. Quinn and renamed St. Catherine’s Hospital. The name honors St. Catherine Laboure, a Daughter of Charity who dedicated her life to caring for the sick, the poor, and the underserved.

In 1993, St. Catherine’s Hospital was changed to Seton Coastside. The name change reflected the integration of the hospital into one administrative entity. Seton Coastside continues to benefit from a shared vision and shared services with Seton Medical Center, a tertiary-care hospital, and the commitment of the Daughters of Charity to the sick, the poor, and the underserved.

Today, Seton Coastside continues to offer skilled nursing care to 116 inpatient residents year-round, in addition to meeting the healthcare needs of our patients, and the surrounding coastal community. Our dedicated staff of interdisciplinary healthcare team professionals, provide excellent, comprehensive healthcare that is both compassionate and attentive to the whole person’s body, mind, and spirit. We believe Caring is Powerful Medicine. We take pride in operating the only 24-hour standby Emergency Department from Daly City to Santa Cruz, which is well-equipped and staffed to serve the needs of our community. Our key medical services include physical, occupational and speech therapies, radiology/mammography and laboratory. At Seton Coastside, we proudly carry out the mission of the Daughters and continue to collaborate with our professional staff and community partners to shape the future of quality healthcare on the Coastside.
